We could simplify the evolution of such a characteristic accessory of the 1970s, an object often shrouded in ambiguity regarding the sexual orientation of its wearer. Back then, the prototype of a heterosexual man was well-defined, yet many sought to join a community swept up by trends arriving from other corners of the world. The ethical divide emerged with the concept of new masculinities—those who believed that being a man meant drawing boundaries and making limits clear. This is where fashion stepped in, and fortunately, more and more creators are striving to unify perspectives when shaping new movements, perhaps focusing more on the individual essence of the human being rather than the characterization of gender.
I call them artists because, with their creativity, they have turned a basic necessity into an art form. To understand this, we must recognize that art is anything capable of evoking a feeling or emotion in the observer. No one escapes the personal scrutiny we perform whenever we encounter any surface that reflects our image. If there’s one thing that unites us all, it’s that we cannot escape opinions, whether our own or those of others. Perhaps we should continue supporting those who fight to tear down walls and borders between genders, but it will mean nothing if we keep wounding ourselves with the barbed wire of our own conscience.
